Three Guesses [18 Dec 2009]

Hopefully everyone enjoyed our holiday festivities. That was a nice way to end the first trimester of the school year. Thanks to Tati and Ruby for organizing.

  1. Humanities: Stay tuned for a post or an email with a pdf copy of Annabel Scheme.

  2. Performing Arts: You have an assignment from Debra that is due January 31. Don’t wait until the last minute to make plans.

Have a great break!

This post serves two purposes: (1) To let Anthony experience The Three Stooges (more here) which were mentioned the other day. (2) To remind you that you’ll be holding a mock trial some time in the new year. The first short contained in the video is a courtroom scene. The Best of the Three Stooges.

Oh, and, by the way, which of The Three Stooges (images here) does each of the tcsnmy7 stooges resemble? Send me an email with your answer.

  2. Humanities: If you missed class today, don’t forget to bring your ALHOTW timeline tomorrow.

  3. Humanities: Read the Renaissance entry on Wikipedia.

  4. Performing Arts: You have an assignment from Debra that is due January 31. Don’t wait until the last minute to make plans.

Share the LA trip photo CD with your family.

Performing Arts Homework

Please see a live professional performance between now and the end of January. Ideally, this would be a live onstage play or musical. Movies and TV do not count. If you need help figuring out what to see, or have an economic or time restriction that would make this difficult, please communicate with Debra ASAP to discuss your options.

Due January 31, please answer the following questions in writing and be prepared to discuss them briefly in class.

  1. What production did you see?
  2. What story or message was the director/playwright trying to tell?
  3. Were they successful in conveying this message? Why or why not?
  4. How did you feel watching it? Why?
  5. Did you like it? Why or why not?
  6. What sparked your interest to learn more about after seeing this show?

This was a quick, not-quite-an-unboxing of Annabel Scheme that Anthony and the gang put together yesterday during Open Studio. For those not in the know, Annabel Scheme is Robin Sloan’s book. He’s the writer previously mentioned on this blog here, here, here, here, and here.

Note: Here is a site dedicated to unboxings. And here are some other unboxings of Annabel Scheme.

Thank you all for the honest feedback about the first trimester of humanities. Ladies, thank you for caring enough to torture me with pink.

  1. Humanities: The final version of your story needs to be posted by the end of class tomorrow. Take time to make some of the changes suggested to you by your peers. Don’t forget to have it proofread for spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation errors too.

  2. Humanities: By tomorrow you will need to finish reading chapters twenty-six through thirty-one in A Little History of the World. You are also expected to take notes and make a timeline of the events in the book.

  3. Humanities: Watch the Beatles 3000 video again.

  4. Science: If you have not posted or turned in your cell mitosis cartoon, please make sure it is posted or completed.

  5. Math/Science: If you have not completed your self-reflection, please complete and send back to Carwai.

  6. Español: Trabajen en su cuento de hadas usando el pretérito.

We will meet with Debra again tomorrow to finalize the content and format of the second trimester performing arts project. Be ready.

Homework Club Update

Beatles 3000 is a humorous reminder that our understanding of history comes from an assemblage of artifacts that probably contains errors. So, enjoy this glimpse of “1000 years in the future [when] the legacy of John, Paul, Greg, and Scottie remains,” but think about how our image of the Middle Ages (or any other time) might be viewed by those who lived through it.

Book recommendations from Robin Sloan

In case you missed it over on Twitter, Sarah Laskow asked Robin Sloan:

share! what are some books you stayed up late for?

Here is his reply:

Where to START? As a kid: The Dark is Rising series / The Chronicles of Prydain / The Westing Game / every Roald Dahl book ever

and

But the His Dark Materials series might be number one in my book for the “one more page, I don’t want to leave this world” effect.

Notes: The sixth graders have just finished Over Sea, Under Stone, the first book in The Dark is Rising series. The NMY Collection contains a copy of each of the books in the His Dark Materials trilogy. There are several copies of The Westing Game available if you want to borrow one. And Charlie probably has most of the Roald Dahl books if you can’t find what you want in the library.

I’ll leave it up to our Norwegian friends to explain what’s going on in the picture above. (That’s assuming they’re keeping up with the news from back home.) It comes from the second part of a series documenting “2009 in Photos” on The Big Picture. You can also visit part one and part three.
